On the Isle of Wight in England, the 1985 Bureau of Applied Sciences International Symposium on the Promotion of Unconventional Ideas in Science, Medicine and Sociology, identified Michael J. Cohen, Ed.D. as a "maverick genius." Dr. Cohen was so designated for his organic, nature-connected ecopsychology contribution to preventing contemporary people from making themselves and the environment suffer unnecessarily. Some conference organizers said Dr. Cohen was like the reincarnation of Henry David Thoreau as a Psychologist.

Cohen had shown that most of us learn to undervalue a significant fact of life: we feel and relate better when we are in sensuous contact with the nature of our living planet, Earth, when we genuinely connect our thinking with a plant, rock or mineral or to the wind, hills and stars. Cohen said this was equally true of our connections to a pet, garden, or park, or to a house plant, aquarium, beach, forest or lake.
